KING ULTRAMEGA is a passion-driven musical project honoring the life, voice, and genius of Chris Cornell, launching in conjunction with Soundgarden’s long-overdue Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
Created by bassist and producer Mark Menghi, the project grew organically from a 2020 pandemic session recording “Rusty Cage” with friends, into a full-scale tribute driven by deep respect and emotional connection.
The turning point came when Soundgarden’s own Kim Thayil joined to re-record one of his iconic tracks. With Thayil’s blessing, Menghi enlisted a remarkable roster including Charlie Benante, Joe Satriani, William DuVall, Bill Kelliher, Alissa White-Gluz, Kenny Aronoff, and more. The project blends old friendships and new collaborations, each artist contributing their own musical stamp while honoring Cornell’s legacy.
Menghi’s approach was guided by one question: “How would Chris like this?” Every song choice and production decision was made to respect Cornell’s artistry. While KU offers fresh interpretations, the aim was never reinvention—only reverence. Songs were chosen instinctively, often tied to personal reflection.
The recordings, completed remotely over several years, capture the raw emotion of live performance. The project also supports MusiCares, reflecting its commitment to compassion within the music community.
For Menghi and his collaborators, KING ULTRAMEGA is a labor of love, a celebration of one of rock’s greatest voices, and an invitation for new listeners to discover Chris Cornell’s timeless brilliance. It is both a tribute and a reminder that Chris was, and remains, a true musical genius.
